“Do whatever brings you to life, then. Follow your own fascinations, obsessions, and compulsions. Trust them. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart.”

If you’ve ever felt a burning urge to create…
you owe it to yourself to honour that urge.

However, I 100% get it…

Painting is intimidating!

I’ve heard it a million times. Where do you start? For any creative, a blank canvas is definitely one of the most paralysing things you can encounter — all sorts of fears can come to the surface upon the sight of one: “What if I make something ugly?” / “What if I ruin the canvas?” / “But I’m not an artist!?!”

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. Trust me when I say that I myself have made a bajillion excuses for myself to avoid doing the very thing that I know makes my heart sing loudest. The thought of literally infinite possibilities of colors, patterns, shapes, and compositions that you can come up with is freakin’ overwhelming. What I’ve learned over the years, however, is that giving in to these fears can rob you of the JOY it brings to just create without giving a crap! Because creating, if you are drawn to it, is supposed to be FUN.

And this is where abstract painting comes in.

More than any other art technique, I think abstract painting is one of the best ways you can really experience the joy, freedom, and flow of creating without fear. The true magic of abstract painting is in the process, not the outcome. It’s about being in the moment, giving yourself permission to play, experiment, make mistakes, and simply focusing on wherever your intuition takes you on the canvas.

It’s also about just STARTING. Things are a lot scarier in our heads than in reality. If you’ve always been curious about this medium, but have never allowed yourself to follow that curiosity because of paralysing limiting beliefs you may have in your subconscious about what it means to be an “artist”... then let this be that sign from the universe telling you that you should just GO FOR IT.

Living a fulfilling creative life is about choosing curiosity over fear.

If you are ready to believe in your innate creativity and just need a little push to help you get on your way, I would love to help you out!

about your instructor

Ivy is a Filipina visual artist and graphic designer.  She started her creative career 8 years ago as an advertising art director, working her way up the ranks for 4 years until she realised that her true joy was found in living a creative life away from the corporate world. Completely self-taught, her painting journey began in 2016, after many years of delaying that urge due to limiting beliefs and unfounded worries around what other people will think. (UPDATE: other people did not care… and isn’t that such a liberating thought?)

Her work is inspired by the here and now, spirituality, the perfect imperfections of the natural world, and the vibrancy of life. These are expressed through her affinity for colours, textures, and mark-making. She follows an intuitive art practice, and strives to live a life driven by curiosity and excitement amidst the uncertainties of this creative path. She is in the process of finding her voice — and believes that it will forever be evolving the more she grows into her identity as an artist. She hopes to help you on your journey in finding yours.
